چکیده

Submitted for the MAR15 Meeting of The American Physical Society Physical Aging in a Colloidal Glass Subjected to Concentration Jump Conditions1 XIAOGUANG PENG, GREGORY B. MCKENNA, Department of Chemical Engineering, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, 79409, Texas, USA — We have prepared a thermo-sensitive core-shell PS-PNIPAM/AA latex system and have investigated the aging dynamics of its colloidal dispersions subsequent to the temperature (or concentration)-jump perturbations using sequential creep experiments to probe the response of the system. The aging experiments were performed in the vicinity of the glass transition concentration or temperature as evidenced by the strongly varying relaxation time with decreasing temperature (or increasing concentration). The aging results from the current colloidal glass study are compared with those expected in the Kovacs’ catalogue of experiments in structural recovery of glassy polymers, viz., intrinsic isotherms, asymmetry of approach and memory events [1]. We found that colloidal glass displays aging behavior and time-aging time superposition is valid here. There are similarities in aging dynamics between colloidal glasses and molecular glasses, and differences also persist. [1] A.J. The physics of the colloidal glass transition.

As one increases the concentration of a colloidal suspension, the system exhibits a dramatic increase in viscosity. Beyond a certain concentration, the system is said to be a colloidal glass; structurally, the system resembles a liquid, yet motions within the suspension are slow enough that it can be considered essentially frozen. For several decades, colloids have served as a valuable model sy...

Dynamics and structure of an aging binary colloidal glass.

We study aging in a colloidal suspension consisting of micron-sized particles in a liquid. This system is made glassy by increasing the particle concentration. We observe samples composed of particles of two sizes, with a size ratio of 1:2.1 and a volume fraction ratio 1:6, using fast laser scanning confocal microscopy. This technique yields real-time, three-dimensional movies deep inside the c...

Fluctuation-dissipation theorem in an aging colloidal glass.

We provide a direct experimental test of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) in an aging colloidal glass. The use of combined active and passive microrheology allows us to independently measure both the correlation and response functions in this nonequilibrium situation. Contrary to previous reports, we find no deviations from the FDT over several decades in frequency (1 Hz-10 kHz) and fo...

Facile and economic method for preparation of nano-colloidal Silica with controlled size and stability

This study is focused on synthesis of nano-colloidal silica via alkaline water glass solution. Sodium ions of water glass were removed by cation exchanging in a resin column to obtain the silicic acid which was titrated to the solution of sodium silicate. Concentration of the colloidal silica and pH value of the solutions were controlled using different concentrations of alkaline sodium silicat...
